The government provides loans to help UK students with the cost of study. The interest rate on these loans is linked to the Retail Price Index and you don’t need to repay these loans until you have left university. Repayments are in monthly instalments that are linked to what you earn.
There are two types of student loan:
- a tuition fee loan, and
- a maintenance loan.
Most students don’t have the funds to pay tuition fees before they study. If that’s the case, you can apply for a tuition fee loan. If eligible, you’re entitled to this loan no matter what your household income. The Student Loans Company will pay this money to the University directly.
You start to repay your tuition fee loan from the April after you leave university, providing you earn at least £25,000 per year. * If your income falls below this level, your repayments will be suspended. If you work in the UK and are paid by an employer, loan repayments will be taken from your salary automatically.
There are alternative arrangements for people who are self-employed or working outside the UK. You can find more details about repayments on our Student Money website.
* This is the current level for repayments for those working in the UK after graduation. These levels may differ for people working outside the UK after graduation.
Support is available from the government in the form of maintenance loans and other means-tested grants. A maintenance loan covers your day-to-day living costs, including accommodation, food, books and travel. How much you will receive will depend on where you live and the support available from your funding provider, with all eligible students receiving at least some non means-tested support. Visit our Student Money website for details.
Extra grants may be available for students with additional costs, for example, if you have children, or a disability. You should look into this well before you start your course, because you need to apply and be assessed for this support. See the Student Finance Wales / Student Finance England website for details and when to apply.
