Management of Minor Illness and Minor Injuries within Clinical Practice
The aim of the module is to educate in first contact care. How to undertake a history to establish a working diagnosis and to set provide patients with a plan of care.

The aim of the module is to educate in first contact care. How to undertake a history to establish a working diagnosis and to provide patients with a plan of care. This module will enable applicants to be ready to either start setting up their own minor illness clinic or joining one of the main Out of hours or 111 services that have been set up in Wales to provide first contact triage and face to face services.

On completion, the applicant will gain a 40 credit Master L6 qualification in the management of minor illness for Primary care. This module is only taken as an individual module.

This course will teach you how to set up a minor illness service and produce specific MI management of care protocols. It will equip you with paediatric and adult clinical examination skills and pharmacology and therapeutic medicine management skills.
Common Minor illness presentation of:
- Respiratory
- Dermatology
- Gastro intestinal
- Women’s Health
- Childhood common disease
- Minor injures
- Muscular Skeletal common presentations
- Law and ethics
You will be taught using a mixture of the following methods:
- Tutorial
- Seminars
- Group work
- Self-directed study
- History taking skills and consultation models
- Clinical skills necessary to undertake a holistic examination of patients and differential diagnosis of a range of minor conditions
- Clinical pharmacology and therapeutic use of medicines relevant to the management of minor conditions
You will need to dedicate at least 3–5 hours a week to the course, on top of attendance 10am -5pm each week.
To apply for this course, you will need to demonstrate:
- That you can write at L6
- That you are working in community/First contact practice for 16 plus hours a week
- That you have a medical mentor /Practice Assessor you can work alongside for 3 hours minimum a week
- That you have an ANP /practice assessor
Pre-course reading of Minor Illness Manual by Johnson will hold you in good stead by reading up on minor illness prior to the course. Shadowing your Medical mentor/ANP- Practice assessor when undertaking minor illness clinics or undertaking physical examinations skills will also help you with this course.
The summative assignment consist of x10 prescribed scenarios’ which will demonstrate:
- Critically discussion and appraisal of the evidence base for the skills necessary to assess patients with a range of undifferentiated problems leading to diagnosis or referral.
- Critical awareness of pharmacological issues relevant to the management of minor conditions, whilst the verifying the level of evidence to support discussion.
The summative Clinical Learning Outcomes will be demonstrated by completing 5 work books in clinical practice with your practice assessor.
- To assess, plan, provide and evaluate specialist clinical nursing care to meet the care needs of individuals and groups in the practice population.
- Discuss the evidence base for the skills necessary to assess and develop treatment options for a patient with a range of undifferentiated problems.
- Demonstrate an awareness of pharmacological issues relevant to the management of minor illness conditions.
Formative authentic scenario will be completed in class.
You will have an allocated personal tutor.
You will need to arrange a Medical Mentor and an advanced nurse practitioner to oversee you clinically during the course and for them to sign you off as competent too.
