Principles of Wound Management
The aim of this module is to promote knowledge and skills related to wound care management in a healthcare setting.

The aim of this 40-credit Level 6 (Degree) or level 7 (Masters) module is to promote knowledge and skills related to wound care management in a healthcare setting, to inform and develop practice and improve patient outcomes.
The module runs on Monday between 10am and 4pm from January for 14 weeks.

- Holistic assessment and caring for the whole person.
- Theory of health promotion in relation to changing patient behaviours and concordance
- Principles of wound healing
- National guidelines on leg ulceration.
- Doppler and compression theory with some opportunity to practice doppler ankle brachial pressure index recording, and compression bandaging.
- National guidelines on pressure ulcer prevention- pressure ulcer risk assessment and grading methods.
- The management of patients with specific wounds and conditions, e.g. diabetes and lymphoedema management.
- Infection and colonisation issues (SSI’s).
- Dermatological issues in wound care.
- Surgical and traumatic wounds.
You will be taught using a range of methods from lectures and seminars, demonstrations, virtually via our online learning system (blackboard) and through classroom discussions where students will share their experiences.
We invite specialist practitioners and University lecturers to deliver sessions.
There will be a blended learning approach with both face to face, on campus and online sessions, and directed learning involving recorded materials.
Case study presentations will be utilised within the sessions enabling students to link the theory to practice when considering their assessment.
Formative assessment: You will complete a case study on which to base your summative assessment.
Summative assessment:
Part 1: A 15minute presentation of a case study from practice exploring an aspect of wound care.
Part 2: A review of the literature that informs effective wound management.
There is no interview to join this course, but please ensure you fit the criteria listed.
You must be a health professional employed in an area where you manage patients with wounds and are able to identify a case study to explore an aspect of wound care for assessment purposes.
You will be assigned an academic supervisor who will assist you with your academic work.
