Making USW my top choice

I've always had an interest in history. I like the stories. I like the people. I like going back into a different time, or another country. A lot of people on my course say Horrible Histories started their interest in history and that's true for me too. I've just always enjoyed history.

This course has helped me look at things with a more critical eye. History at university isn't just remembering dates - it's being more of a detective, like a historical Sherlock! It’s a really worthwhile skill to be able to look at a a remnant from the past and consider the context in which it was produced, who wrote it, and for what purpose.

I was considering doing just the Open University because I'd done my A-levels that way, but I came to an Open Day and an Applicant Experience Day and I really liked it here. I met the lecturers and the course leader Rachel showed us a video from the Second World War to encourage us to challenge preconceived notions of ‘Keep Calm and Carry On’. For example, there were a lot of people who were complaining about wartime measures such as rationing , so it's quite interesting to get that other perspective.

I currently live in the Valleys and commute to Cardiff. Living at home helps with saving money but I also like the sense of familiarity. Being able to go home and study in my home environment and knowing my life hasn't been completely rebooted.

After I graduate, ideally I want to do something like writing biographies of historical figures, especially the royals. If that doesn't work out, I think I'd probably like to work in a museum.
