The facility is being built at the University of South Wales (USW) as part of continued investment in the institution’s facilities.

The USW Sport Park enhancement in Treforest will see the addition of the latest generation 3G indoor pitch, which is being built to the FIFA Pro standard and World Rugby 22 standard, alongside a specialist centre for strength and conditioning, with 12 lifting platforms, changing rooms, teaching rooms, and offices. In total there will be an extra 9500 sq ft of space.

There will also be two new floodlit outdoor 3G football and rugby pitches. This will add to the seven other outdoor pitches already available at the site including a full-size football all-weather pitch, a full-size floodlit all-weather hockey pitch, four grass football pitches and two grass rugby pitches, as well as a six-court sports hall.

A number of professional rugby teams have already trained at the Sport Park, including the British and Irish Lions, and the Australian, New Zealand and South African national teams.

The facility, which is being built by Kier Construction and was designed by Atkins, is due to be completed by the end of this year.

The steel frame for the teaching rooms and offices is already in place, with work underway on the steel frame for the area, which will house the 3G pitch.

Dr Martin Steggall, Dean of the Faculty of Life Sciences and Education, said: “The introduction of world-class facilities at our USW Sport Park will not only benefit students on our sport courses and our students that represent the university in a variety of sports, but also build on some of the sector-leading research in to physiology, strength and condition, and sports psychology, to name just a few of our strengths.

“The facility is already well used by the local community and professional teams, and this is something that we hope to expand on in the future.

“We are not only investing in pitches, but also in strength and conditioning and analysis facilities that will support our students in developing all aspects of their sporting excellence.”

Jason Taylor, Operations Director for Kier Construction, said: “We are delighted to be the construction partner of choice for the new development at the USW Sport Park at Treforest. It is exciting to be integral in the creation of the first full size 3G indoor sports pitch in Wales, which will provide a new platform for future rising talent in sport.”

Prospective students for our Sports courses will be able to see the early stages of the build, and find out more about the new facilities, at an undergraduate and postgraduate information fair on Wednesday March 29.

The information fair is open to all students who are looking to start studying a course at the University from September 2017, whether on a full-time or part-time basis. You can book your place at the information fair via the University website: http://www.southwales.ac.uk/open-days/
