The University of South Wales sponsored the sixth annual South Wales Argus Business Awards, held at USW’s Newport Campus last week.

Held on Thursday November 16, the awards showcased businesses of all sizes across the Gwent region, recognising companies and businesspeople in a range of categories, including Business of the Year and a Lifetime Achievement Award, as well as Lasting Contribution to Gwent – a new award for 2023.

A panel discussion on the topic of ‘creating an environment for business success’ – led by South Wales Argus editor Gavin Thompson – saw lively contributions from Solar Buddies founders Laura Waters and Kelli Apsland, Richie Turner, Incubator Manager at USW’s Startup Stiwdio, Industrial Automation and Control managing director Peter Lewis – who also received the lifetime achievement award – and Torfaen County Borough Council leader Anthony Hunt.

Dr Aylwin Yafele, Associate Dean of the South Wales Business School, said: “The South Wales Business Awards showcased the best of the business community in the Gwent region and were reminder of why we are a valuable resource for the region; our ambition is to continue being a major contributor.

“USW in particular continues to support the regional economy through innovation, research & development. Our students are increasingly equipped to engage with businesses through our challenge based, industry informed and applied curriculum.

“Our students are actively devising solutions to the challenges local businesses are facing, for example through the South Wales Business Clinic, where students work on real life consultancy projects. USW is proud to continuously develop new talent and improve access to this talent.”
