University of South Wales hosts Premier League
8 April, 2026
The University of South Wales (USW) recently hosted a prestigious coach development event delivered by the Premier League.
Held at USW’s Sport Park, the event formed part of the Premier League’s Elite Coach Accreditation Scheme (ECAS), bringing together some of the most promising coaches from across English football. Participants currently work within Elite Player Performance Plan Category 1 academies at clubs including Liverpool FC, Arsenal FC, Aston Villa FC, Newcastle United FC, and Crystal Palace FC.
The intensive programme, titled ‘A Week in 48 Hours’, immerses coaches in a high-pressure simulation of their first week managing an English Football League 2 club. For this event, the scenario was based on Newport County AFC, challenging participants to navigate the demands of senior leadership, decision-making, and team performance within a condensed two-day period.
The event is the result of an ongoing collaboration between USW and the Premier League’s Coach Development department. Over the past two years, USW’s Professor Brendan Cropley has been conducting research into coach development systems within elite football academies.
The event provided opportunities for USW staff and students. USW sport staff supported ECAS participants in assistant coaching roles, while football coaching students contributed as players and performance analysts. This hands-on involvement enabled students to experience the realities of elite football environments first-hand.
Professor Cropley said: “By hosting the Premier League’s ECAS, we have created a ‘living lab’, offering our students unparalleled access to elite-level coaching practice. The event provided insights into the pressures of professional management, the skills required to lead high-performance teams, and how top coaches develop and implement their philosophies.
“The event highlights USW’s commitment to blending academic excellence with real-world experience, reinforcing its reputation as a sector leader in football education and coach development.”
