University of South Wales and Newport County AFC celebrate strategic partnership

The University of South Wales (USW) and Newport County Association Football Club are celebrating the launch of a partnership that is creating valuable opportunities for students while strengthening links between education and professional football.

The collaboration sees Newport County AFC based at the University's Sport Park, where the first team trains and carries out elements of its day-to-day operations. Building on that foundation, the partnership has developed into a wide-ranging relationship designed to provide students with real-world industry experience from across a range of subjects.

Students are already benefiting from the collaboration through placements and internships in press and media, football analysis, physiotherapy, fashion, and strength and conditioning, with further opportunities planned throughout the coming academic year.

The partnership builds on USW's long track record of helping students progress into careers in professional sport, with Newport County AFC's Head of Coaching, Ben Gast, among its successful graduates.

Ben studied at USW as both an undergraduate and postgraduate student before building a career with Swansea City, Bristol City, and now Newport County. He credits USW’s strong industry links and practical learning opportunities with helping him establish his career.

"The connections through the course leaders were fantastic in terms of introducing me to people in the industry," he said. "The combination of practical coaching experience and academic study gave me the knowledge and confidence to build my career in professional football.

He added that the support he received from academic staff has continued long after graduation.

"I still regularly speak to USW lecturers who have always had my best interests at heart. That support has continued throughout my career."

Now responsible for developing coaches and supporting young professionals at Newport County, Ben says it is rewarding to see today's USW students gaining experience through the partnership.

"It's exciting to work with talented, motivated students who are just starting out in their careers," he said. "At a club like Newport County, students often get opportunities to be involved in meaningful projects. We've seen student interns progress into employment. The experience they gain through placements can genuinely open doors for them."
