University of South Wales hosts FAW showcase of Wales' next generation of football talent

The University of South Wales (USW) welcomed the Football Association of Wales' (FAW) prestigious Cymru Cup, bringing together some of the country's most promising young footballers for three days of elite competition.

Now in its 16th year, the Cymru Cup is a key part of the Football Association of Wales' player development pathway, with players competing for the opportunity to earn selection for the Cymru Men's Under-15 national team. The tournament has helped launch the careers of many current Welsh internationals.

Jonathan Jones, USW Lecturer and member of the Cymru Cup coaching team, said: "The Cymru Cup was a fantastic event and it was brilliant to see so many talented young players enjoying the experience and showcasing their abilities over the three days. The standard of football was exceptionally high, but what stood out just as much was the commitment and sportsmanship shown by everyone involved. A huge amount of work goes into delivering an event like this, and it was great to see players, coaches, staff, and students all contribute to making it such a success."

USW students gained valuable industry experience throughout the event. From courses in sport therapy, football coaching, and sports journalism, they had the opportunity to put their learning into practice while supporting the delivery of at a high-profile sporting event.

At USW, we're committed to creating opportunities that extend beyond the classroom, and hosting events like this enables our students to gain valuable real-world experience while working alongside leading organisations such as the FAW. It also reflects the strength of our sporting facilities and our commitment to supporting the development of sport in Wales."

Reflecting on the Cymru Cup, Dr. David Adams said: “The Cymru Cup is the most strategically significant boy’s player development event we operate with 85% of our Men’s National Team competing in this showcase event during their own journeys through our national youth pathway.”

“Equally, it’s a celebration of success of our most talented players aged U14 both domestically and nationally. Craig Bellamy and I we’re really impressed with the quality of the players and their application across the three days.”
