Completing a PhD has transformed the way I think about healthcare.

Research focus

Leon Arrowsmith-Hill's PhD at the University of South Wales focused on using Point of Care Testing (POCT) to improve diagnosis of Deep Vein Thrombosis (DVT) and Acute Respiratory Infections (ARIs). POCT provides quick, bedside results, helping doctors make faster and more accurate decisions. His research tested whether POCT could replace slow, lab-based, D-dimer testing for suspected DVTs, reducing delays in life-threatening cases. He also studied FebriDx for ARIs, which helps distinguish between viral and bacterial infections, supporting better antibiotic use. Funded by the KESS programme, his PhD was conducted in collaboration with industry leaders including LumiraDx, Roche, and the manufacturer of FebriDx, and was embedded within the NHS primary care setting.

Research experience

"Completing a PhD has transformed the way I think about healthcare. It taught me how to generate evidence, influence practice, and collaborate across sectors. It was the hardest thing I’ve ever done, but the most rewarding. If you’re passionate about making change through research, a PhD is one of the most powerful platforms to do it.”
