Mathematics research is organised into three key themes: Algebra and Combinatorics; Data Science and Industrial Mathematics; and Computational Modelling. 


The group has made important contributions to research in group theory, coding theory, mathematical biology, system dynamics and operational research. It uses its expertise to respond to problems that affect society and the economy including applied research projects with Visa UK, Tata Steel, Aneurin Bevan University Health Board and NHS Wales Informatics Service.

  • 74% of outputs are world leading or internationally excellent (4* / 3*)  
  • Second out of eight post-92 universities for outputs - based on 4*
