2026/27 Sport Scholarships

Scholarship information and FAQs

Applicants should meet one or more of the following criteria:

      • International representative honours at age-group or senior level.
      • Part of the top tier of your National Governing Body’s performance pathway.
      • Significant experience at academy level (or above) of a professional sport.
      • Continued success at national age group or senior championships.
  • Applicants must provide two references confirming their sporting achievements as part of their application, as well as a supporting statement from themselves.
  • New undergraduate applicants must have applied for entry to year 0 or year 1 of a full-time USW undergraduate degree lasting 3 or more academic years starting in September 2026.
  • New postgraduate applicants must have applied for entry to a full-time USW postgraduate course lasting 1 or more academic years starting in the 2026-27 academic year.
  • Applicants must have applied for a course studying on a University of South Wales campus (Treforest, Glyntaff, Cardiff or Newport).
  • The scholarship is not applicable to students studying HND/HNC, Cert HE, Foundation Degree, top up year(s) or non-honours degrees.
  • International students are not eligible for this scholarship.  
  • New undergraduate students must be enrolled full-time on year 0 or year 1 of a course at the time of payment in November 2026.  
  • Continuing undergraduate students must be enrolled in full-time on subsequent years of their course at the time of payment in November 2026. 
  • New and continuing postgraduate applicants must be enrolled full-time on a postgraduate course at time of payment in November 2026 or March 2027, depending on course start date. 
  • Sport Scholars will be required to feature in case studies and in promotional material and sign up as student ambassadors and attend USW Open Days and Applicant Days.  
  • Sport Scholars will be expected to represent the University in BUCS competitions or other University-related competitions and adhere to the University’s Student Code of Conduct.  
  • All Sport Scholars will be required to take part in the Students’ Union’s Values and Behaviours training workshop. 
  • The panel’s decision will be final and there will be no appeals process.

For new undergraduate students: 

  • The scholarship amount is £2,000. 
  • Students must apply to the University of South Wales by 6th May 2026 and firmly accept their offer of study by 3rd June 2026.  
  • Students must apply for the scholarship by 6th May 2026. 
  • The panel will meet to consider all applications in early May 2026.  
  • Applicants will be notified if they are successful by the end of May 2026.  
  • Applications outside these deadlines could be considered on an exceptional basis.

For new postgraduate students:

  • The scholarship amount is £2,000. 
  • Students must apply to the University of South Wales by 30 June 2026. 
  • Students must apply for the scholarship by 30 June 2026  
  • The panel will meet to consider all applications in early July 2026.  
  • Applicants will be notified if they are successful by the mid-July 2026.  
  • Applications outside these deadlines could be considered on an exceptional basis.

For existing undergraduate or postgraduate students: 

  • The scholarship amount is £1,000. 
  • Students must apply for the Sport Scholarship by 31st July 2026. 
  • The panel will meet to consider all applications in early August 2026.  
  • Applicants will be notified if they are successful by the end of August 2026.  
  • Applications outside these deadlines could be considered on an exceptional basis, subject to availability.

  • The process to apply for a financial support depends on your category eligibility. Before you apply, we recommend reviewing the eligibility criteria for each award.
  • All applicants and current students are required to complete our online application form if they are seeking to obtain support.
  • Once you complete your application, you will receive an automatic notification by email. If you do not receive this notification, please contact [email protected] or [email protected] to confirm receipt.
  • You will then receive confirmation of your eligibility, and subject to meeting the terms and conditions.
  • Final confirmation of receipt of award will be confirmed once assessments are undertaken and prior to the start of your course.
  • The panel’s decision will be final and there is no appeals process.
  • You are welcome to apply in Welsh. Any applications received in Welsh will be treated no less favourably than an application submitted in English.
  • Please note: any award can only be activated once you have successfully enrolled onto your course.
