Why Accounting - and Why USW
I’ve always been drawn to the structure and logic behind accounting. The way everything connects, from cash flow to financial statements. It’s logical, precise, and satisfying to understand how it all fits together. I chose USW because of its SAGE accreditation, which stood out from other universities. The software is used throughout the course, giving you real, hands-on experience of the systems professionals use every day.
We’ve had more live projects than I expected, including working with Audit Wales, Transport for Wales, and local councils. These experiences made the course feel practical and relevant. The professional exemptions are another huge benefit, with nine from ACCA and further exemptions from CIMA, ICAEW and CIPFA, giving you a head start toward chartered status. The Trading Room has also been central for testing and software-based work, including our SAGE assessments.

Building Skills for the Future
My proudest project has been the audit simulation, where we examined a company’s financial records and identified key risks and solutions. It felt like real-world problem-solving and helped sharpen my analytical and communication skills. Presenting to visiting organisations has also built my confidence, something that’s vital in this profession.
I’m planning to go into audit or forensic accounting after graduation, ideally with an organisation like Audit Wales. My advice for anyone considering accounting is simple: understand what exemptions you’ll graduate with and choose the course that aligns with your career goals.
