Real-World Links and Professional Advantage

After studying engineering, I wanted to move into finance and business, and accounting offered the best combination of structure and versatility. USW stood out for its smaller class sizes, close-knit teaching, and practical setup. An Open Day conversation with my future lecturer confirmed that this was the right place to study.

The course has given me great exposure to industry, from networking events to a live presentation project with Rhondda Cynon Taf Council’s recycling systems team. Professionally, the degree offers substantial exemptions - nine with ACCA and significant coverage with CIMA and CIPFA, which saves time and cost after university. Having lecturers who are professionals in the field makes a big difference too; they bring everything back to real-world context.

Highlights and Skill Growth

My favourite assignments have been those connecting real data and current affairs, like analysing the Post Office scandal and its financial implications. The digital accounting and taxation modules have pushed my Excel and technical skills further than ever before, preparing me for practical work beyond university.

I’m interested in management accounting and taxation, and I’m aiming for a role that allows me to complete my professional exams alongside work. My advice: make the most of smaller classes – talk to lecturers, ask questions, and approach every task like it’s already part of your career.
