Finding a new path and purpose

The Open Day cemented it. I met lecturers, explored the therapy rooms, and spoke with current students.

From teaching to therapy

Before moving to the UK, I worked as a teacher in Sri Lanka for over five years. I’ve always been passionate about supporting others, but I wanted to make a difference in people’s emotional and mental wellbeing. When I arrived in Wales, I researched universities that offered strong practical counselling degrees - there weren’t many. USW stood out for its blend of theory and hands-on experience, BACP alignment and the inclusion of 100 clinical hours.

The Open Day cemented it. I met lecturers, explored the therapy rooms, and spoke with current students. Everything felt supportive and real. Since joining, I’ve never looked back - there’s a strong sense of community on this course, and the focus on practical learning gave me the confidence to find my own counselling style.

OUR LECTURERS AREN’T JUST TEACHERS - THEY’RE ACTIVE THERAPISTS.

Gaining confidence and giving back

My placements through USW have given me valuable, real-world experience. I currently support clients through the university’s therapy team and work with school students via Talking Zone. I also volunteer with the NHS Employable Wellbeing Team, which has helped me understand how mental health support works in the workplace. I came in thinking I’d only want to work with children, but thanks to this exposure I’ve discovered I love working with adults too.

I now plan to specialise further in CBT and play therapy after I graduate. I’ve developed so many skills - practising triads built my confidence, and learning to integrate multiple modalities has shaped my approach. My advice? If you’re passionate about counselling, it’s never too late to start. You’ll be guided by accredited therapists who truly care, in a course that prepares you to be confident, compassionate and career-ready.
