I’ve always had side hustles – now my degree has turned that energy into something bigger.
From Side Hustles to Business Management at USW
I grew up in a family surrounded by business, from property to real estate, and I’ve been running side hustles since I was about 15, selling on platforms like Etsy and looking for ways to create something of my own. After a gap year working at Lloyds Bank in the business sector, I eventually decided to go to university – with a strong nudge from my mum. I chose Business and Management at USW because the course was more coursework-based than exam-heavy, which suited the way I learn, and the information on the website and handbooks gave me everything I needed to feel confident about my choice.
Throughout my time at USW, I’ve had multiple opportunities to connect with industry. In the enterprise module, successful business owners came in to share their stories and answer questions, which helped me build contacts and gain real-life insight. I also completed a placement with Rowanvale Books, a small publishing studio in Cardiff, working as a senior marketing adviser. That experience directly fed into my own web design business, and the owner even supported me with proofreading and shaping my website, which was invaluable.

My favourite part of the course has been the AI and business startup modules. In one term we developed a business idea and pitch, and in the next we explored AI tools like ChatGPT and other platforms to create campaigns and content. I loved seeing how AI can be used to build videos, adverts and marketing strategies that look professional and human, and how those tools can support real businesses. Alongside that, the careers team have been a huge support, especially during a difficult year personally, helping me step back, re-focus and plan my next moves.
Right now, I’m focusing on growing my web design business and working with my family in property, while preparing to apply for future graduate schemes in marketing and creative industries. My advice is that if you’ve got an entrepreneurial streak and prefer practical, creative learning to heavy exams, business at USW – especially with the focus on AI and startup businesses– is absolutely worth pursuing.
