Finding My Path into Higher Education
When I finished college, I wasn’t sure if university was still an option for me. I’d only completed the first year of a BTEC and didn’t have the UCAS points needed to go straight into a degree. Discovering the Foundation Year gave me a way forward. It showed me that my education didn’t have to stop, I could still build a future doing something I loved.
I applied to both the first year and Foundation Year of Business Management, but the university explained that starting with the Foundation Year would help me adjust to university life and give me a solid base for success. It turned out to be exactly what I needed, especially as it was my first time living away from home and getting used to a new environment.

Over the year, my confidence grew massively. I learned how to speak in front of people and step outside my comfort zone, something I never thought I’d be able to do before. Having options to present either in front of the class or just to lecturers helped me build confidence gradually. It’s these experiences that have made me feel ready to continue into my degree in Business Management.
Now that I’ve progressed into my Business Management degree, I’m already thinking about the future. I’d love to work in HR, helping people develop their potential in the workplace. I’ve also thought about teaching - doing a postgraduate qualification and returning to inspire others to study business, just like my own teachers inspired me. For anyone unsure about whether to take the Foundation Year, my advice is simple: do it. It might feel like an extra step, but it’s absolutely worth it.
