Finding the foundations of good design

I’m a Graphic Communication student here at USW, and choosing this course has really transformed how I understand design. I initially studied graphics in college but wanted a deeper understanding of how design truly works. It was at an applicant experience day when Stephen, one of the lecturers, showed us how simple black squares could illustrate complex design principles. That demonstration opened my eyes to design as more than just making things look nice - it’s about controlling and understanding how visuals communicate.

The applicant experience day showed me that this course had a strong foundation in design principles, which was lacking in other university courses I’d looked into. The campus itself is a creative hub, full of energy and inspiration, which makes it easy to focus. It’s great being surrounded by like-minded people, and there’s a real social and collaborative vibe that fuels my motivation.

Gaining experience and shaping future goals

In just my first year, I’ve already had the chance to work on live briefs, including one from Gwent Police, and I’ve met many industry professionals who’ve shared invaluable advice. Cardiff as a city really adds to the experience—it’s compact yet dynamic, with a thriving creative community, design studios, and countless resources right next to campus.

After I graduate, I’d love to start in an agency to get a feel for the industry, and eventually, I hope to specialise in UX design. The psychology of design fascinates me, and USW’s hands-on approach and excellent resources have set me up to explore this path with confidence.

My advice? Come to an applicant experience day—you’ll see exactly why this course stands out!
