In this module you will plan, execute and evaluate an Action Research project in your own professional context. The module comprises mainly independent study and research, supported by individual tutorials.

This module aims to enable you to apply the knowledge, critical understanding and skills acquired during the course of study for a specified module through an Action Research project.

It will support you in critically examining the theoretical perspectives and methodological approaches which underpin Action Research and apply this to your own professional context.

The Professional Learning through Action Research module will support the critical evaluation of the research process, drawing on relevant research findings to impact positively on your professional practice.

It will help deepen your understanding and skills to enable you to carry out extended professional research and will be a vehicle which provides the opportunity for bespoke continuing professional learning as part of collaborative partnerships.

This module builds on the Professional Learning module to enable you to use the knowledge gained in that module and apply it to your own research. It is aimed at any practitioner in a professional role.

Typically, participants come from a range of public sector roles or commercial or third sector organisations.

There is the option for participants to collaborate with colleagues by researching topics linked across a common theme.

During the module, you will study:

  • The epistemological and methodological approaches adopted in Action Research.
  • Ethics in research.
  • Generating, analysing and evaluating data: for example: questionnaires, interviews, observation, measurement scales, sampling, innovative data collection methods, reliability and validity of data.
  • Critical evaluation of published research.

The assessed outcome from this module is an Action Research Report (5000 words) supported, where necessary, by appendices.

The precise title will be individually negotiated with the tutor who supports you.

In consultation with the module leader, it may be possible for participants to submit joint assignments where work has been undertaken collaboratively.

This module provides 30 credits at level 7 (Masters level) and can be combined with another module, Professional Learning, to attain a Postgraduate Certificate of Education.

If you then wish to continue your studies, you can use these credits towards a full MA award, including the MA Innovation Learning and Teaching or MA Leadership & Management (Education).
