Seeing how hands-on the course was made the decision easy, and I left feeling excited to start learning the tools I’d always wanted to master.
Choosing the Right Place to Grow My Skills
I’ve wanted to go into animation for as long as I can remember, so when it came time to choose a university, I researched a lot of different courses. When I came to the USW open day and met the tutors, everything clicked. They were welcoming, open to questions and clearly passionate about what they taught. The course covered all the areas I was interested in, so I knew it was the right fit.
The open day stood out, especially trying the green screen workshop where I got to pick up Thor’s hammer, as well as exploring the motion capture room and doing some animation work. Seeing how hands-on the course was made the decision easy, and I left feeling excited to start learning the tools I’d always wanted to master.
Developing Creative and Professional Confidence
Industry engagement has been a huge part of my experience. One highlight was meeting one of the creators behind Courage the Cowardly Dog, which was an amazing chance to ask questions and understand the realities of the animation world. I’ve also been able to collaborate with master’s students, helping with background art, colouring and supporting their projects, and I’ll be doing more of this collaboration in January.
The facilities at USW have set me up well for the future. I use software like Maya, ZBrush, Substance Painter, Blender and soon Unreal Engine, all of which are industry-standard. Having access to such a wide range of tools, along with support from tutors when needed, means I feel prepared for professional work. I’m interested in studios like Blue Zoo, Cartoon Saloon and The Line, but I’m also drawn to the games industry. My advice to anyone joining the course is to research the many areas of animation and keep an open mind. The broader your skillset, the more opportunities you’ll have.
