Design your future – from Graphics at college to Game Art at USW

3D modelling has been my favourite part of the course so far... It's really cool to make something and then see it all come together finalised.

In my previous course in college, I did a lot of graphic design, logos and branding, and I found it really fun and enjoyable. They say, if you love where you work, you'll never work a day in your life, so I thought, wouldn't it be awesome if I went to uni and studied something that I enjoy?

While looking through all the courses on UCAS, I saw Game Art and I thought it would be cool if I could work for one of my favourite game companies in the future and maybe work on some of the games that I love to play.

Career goals and favourite games

I’d love to work for Unknown Worlds - they're the people who developed Subnautica; Bandai Namco who made the Elden Ring games and the Souls series; and Landfall Games – they’ve got more of a simple polygon style, but all the games they make are fun.

I have a lot of favourite games, but I’d say my top two are Subnautica and Elden Ring, because I really like the art in those games. I think the character designs in those games are so good. If I could be a character in any game, I'd probably choose Warframe because you get a bunch of cool abilities.

Building skills and confidence in 2D and 3D Art

3D modelling has been my favourite part of the course so far. I'm enjoying it a lot and I'm getting a lot more experience with the software and the tips and tricks. For example, one of our course leaders showed me a grouping technique so that I didn't have to undo everything every time. It makes you realise that although it seems simple, there's ways to do things a lot more efficiently. It's really cool to make something and then see it all come together finalised.

We work in groups sometimes too. In our 3D modelling project, we’re in a group of five, working together on different assets that we put together into one big scene. You always think making new friends is always nerve-wracking. But with the people on my course and my group, I feel like I got along well with them straight away. Especially with the icebreaker we had in our first lesson.

The facilities are great too. The computers and software are already leagues better than what we had at college.

If you think you wouldn't be able to do this course because you're not very good at art, don't worry.  I'm not the best at 2D art. I've only ever done 3D design and haven’t taken any art classes, but the course leaders are helping me with the fundamentals.

In Gina's lessons, we walk around Cardiff, observe the architecture in the city and draw it. It’s helped me improve my art skills and makes me think about what’s different about the buildings here compared to where I live. There are a lot of impressive structures to look at.

We recently did a lesson on two-point perspective. At first, I didn't get it, and then Gina explained it to me, and I had one more go. It was really gratifying to realise that once I understand it, I can make it look better. I'm going to know what to do.
