Choosing to study at the University of South Wales
Having always wanted a creative career that also offers solid financial opportunities, I chose to study VFX after researching the field and its potential for growth. I initially had no experience with software like Adobe, but learning on the go during my first year has been both challenging and rewarding.
I chose USW because it’s conveniently close to home, allowing me to commute affordably, and it offered one of the best courses in VFX. Attending an Open Day solidified my choice—the hands-on tour, including the green screen room, really set USW apart compared to other universities I considered.

Throughout my studies, we’ve had invaluable networking opportunities. One project involved reaching out to industry professionals for interviews, which helped build connections essential for breaking into VFX. My favourite aspect of the course has been exploring motion design and branding projects, especially as we narrow our focus in the second year. Cardiff, as a creative hub close to major cities like London and Bristol, also offers unique industry exposure.
The course has equipped me well, with lecturers who all have a minimum of five years in the field. Their real-world knowledge is a huge asset for anyone considering this path. For those interested in VFX and Motion Design, USW’s supportive and experienced faculty make it an excellent choice.
Looking ahead, my goal is to work in motion design, ideally at a small-to-medium studio specialising in title sequences or advertising.
