One assignment I’m particularly proud of was creating an information leaflet for patients and families, on Parkinson’s disease.
Working in healthcare sparked my ambition
I’ve worked as a support worker within Aneurin Bevan University Health Board for over 20 years, and I’ve always worked alongside occupational therapists. Seeing the impact they had on people’s lives really inspired me. I wanted to take that next step, to be able to do more, develop my knowledge, and take my career further. I knew I’d reached the limit of what I could do in my role without a qualification.
USW was the obvious choice because of the part-time course, which allowed me to continue working while I studied. I was fortunate to be funded by Aneurin Bevan, and once I secured the place, I attended two open days. Meeting the lecturers really made a difference. They were approachable and clearly passionate about the subject. It gave me the confidence to say, “Yes, I can do this.”

My placement with a stroke team completely changed my perspective. I hadn’t previously considered stroke services, but I really enjoyed the experience. I’m also someone who learns best through practical work, so the course’s hands-on approach really suits me. The simulation centre replicates a hospital setting and helps build confidence for those who haven’t worked in that environment before.
One assignment I’m particularly proud of was creating an information leaflet for patients and families, on Parkinson’s disease - a condition I encounter in my current role in neurology. The project focused on helping patients adapt meaningful activities and stay independent, while also signposting family members and carers to helpful services. It felt really personal and impactful, and it showed me how to communicate clearly and concisely, which is a vital skill in healthcare.
