Growing Up in a Performing Family
Drama has always been part of my life. I grew up surrounded by a family of performers so stepping into the performing arts felt natural to me. I’ve loved it from the beginning, and that sense of belonging is what pushed me towards studying theatre and drama at university.
I found the USW course while browsing for options, and what drew me in was how much creative freedom it offered. I liked that I could put my own influence on my work while also exploring areas outside performance, like lighting. Coming to the open day confirmed my decision, especially after seeing the different studios and getting a feel for the spaces I’d be working in.

The course has given me plenty of insight into the professional world. We’ve had visitors from organisations like It’s My Shout and other theatre groups, who came in to work with us on projects. We also collaborated with groups that involved older people and young people with disabilities, which broadened my understanding of community-focused performance work. This mix of voices and experiences has helped shape the way I approach my own craft.
Collaboration has been a huge part of my time at USW. I’ve worked with film students for acting-for-camera experience and, more recently, have taken on the role of assistant director for a first-year musical after requesting the opportunity. The facilities support all of this, with lighting and sound equipment, as well as spaces where we can learn and test ideas. They’ve helped me understand what it means to work professionally in theatre. I’m now leaning towards roles like facilitating or working in TV, and the links USW provides, including connections with the BBC, make that feel realistic.
