A Lifelong Love of Performing

My passion for theatre started when I was seven, performing in my local theatre company and working on musicals. I loved the sense of teamwork and the friendships that came from creating performances together. When it came time to choose a university, my Welsh teacher encouraged me to continue developing my Welsh, and USW stood out because it offered the opportunity to study parts of the course through the medium of Welsh.

Coming to the open day strengthened that decision. We had workshops led by current students, played drama games and heard from people already on the course. Seeing their perspective helped me understand what life at USW would truly be like beyond what lecturers could tell us, and it made the course feel like the right fit.

Developing Industry Skills and Building Professional Confidence

Throughout the course, we’ve had a range of industry visitors, including people from It’s My Shout, drama companies and professionals involved in scriptwriting, producing and employability. One module focused entirely on preparing us for life after university, which helped me refine my acting CV and even secure an agent.

The facilities have also given me valuable hands-on experience. We use industry-standard lighting and sound desks, and I’ve had the chance to learn camera and green screen skills outside the core course content. Collaboration is a big part of the experience and I’ve worked with film students on mini-scenes, partnered with law students on performance work, and collaborated with fashion students during the Immersed Festival. My goal is to work in film and TV, and the experience I’ve gained here has helped me take real steps towards that. If you’re thinking of joining, my advice is simple: be reliable, show up prepared and become someone people want to work with.
