I was proud to have such a progressive institution on my doorstep.
A calling rooted in family
My journey into learning disability nursing is deeply personal. My son was diagnosed with autism and a learning disability when he was just three. Like many parents, I found myself in a steep learning curve, adjusting to a world of support needs and advocacy. After surviving breast cancer, I reflected on how someone like my son would access complex treatments - how he’d be understood, supported, and treated with dignity. That’s when I knew what I wanted to do. I didn’t just want to become a nurse - I wanted to become the kind of nurse who could truly make a difference to people with learning disabilities.
USW stood out immediately. At the time, it was the only university in South Wales offering the course, and I was proud to have such a progressive institution on my doorstep. I attended two open days, which were brilliant - interactive, welcoming, and full of insight. I even became a student ambassador myself because of how much I loved being part of it all.
Find your courseDiverse placements, clear direction
Over the past three years, I’ve had 11 placements across a huge range of services, from mental health wards and primary care to special schools and even prison settings. I’ve also worked in the private sector with Elysium Healthcare, which helped me challenge my own assumptions. Every placement has equipped me with new skills and reinforced my passion. Now, as I prepare for my final management placement, I feel fully ready to take on a professional role and start making the kind of impact I’ve always envisioned.
My advice? If you’re thinking about this course, especially as a mature student - USW is the place to do it. We’re flying the flag for learning disability nursing, and you’ll be supported by lecturers who truly believe in what they’re teaching.
