The need
As students vacate their USW homes, waste management needs to be taken into consideration. USW has ambitious plans to be carbon neutral by 2040, as such the University is constantly looking at how they can sustainably operate and reduce the volume of waste entering landfill every year. BHF always need unwanted items to help fund life saving research. They reuse over 71,000 tonnes of donations a year and prevent 135,000 tonnes of CO2 being released into the atmosphere.
The solution
USW and BHF Wales have worked in partnership to launch the Pack for Good scheme. The scheme gives students and staff the opportunity to donate unwanted items through collection banks on campus. The donated items, which would otherwise likely have ended up in landfill, will be sold at BHF Wales charity shops, supporting and helping to fund the lifesaving research and work of the charity. As part of the scheme, USW and BHF Wales will look to support a wide range of student engagement events. These include pop-up shop where new students can buy much-needed items for their time at University.
