Why study this course?
What you'll study
Build your understanding of quantity surveying through commercial management, sustainability, professional practice and research.
You’ll connect academic theory with contemporary industry issues, developing a broader perspective on the built environment and your role within it.
Build your commercial decision making skills as you explore cost planning, feasibility, procurement and tendering. You’ll learn to assess risk, manage project costs and develop strategies for different project contexts.
Explore how sustainability, environmental policy and Net Zero goals shape decision making in the built environment. You’ll use real world examples to consider carbon, life cycle thinking and responsible approaches to development.
Develop your skills in managing costs, contracts and risk during construction. You’ll explore valuations, variations, claims and dispute resolution while learning to make informed decisions when projects change.
Develop your professional and business skills as you explore ethics, leadership, governance and organisational management. You’ll consider how these areas influence projects, stakeholders and decision making in the built environment.
Put your knowledge into practice through an independent research project focused on a built environment issue. You’ll develop research skills, analyse evidence and present your findings in a professional or academic format.
We regularly review our courses to keep pace with changing skills and employer needs. If a review leads to significant changes, we’ll contact you to explain what’s changing for the coming year.
Teaching and Assessment
You’ll learn through a blend of academic study and practical activities that reflect the demands of professional quantity surveying. You’ll apply your knowledge to real world construction scenarios, work with others and develop your ability to think critically, reflect on your learning and make informed decisions in complex professional settings.
You’ll learn through interactive lectures, workshops, group activities and practical simulations, including BIM and Virtual Reality. You’ll work with construction case studies and industry informed scenarios, applying your knowledge to commercial challenges. Guest sessions from industry professionals will give you insight into current practice, while independent study and reflection will help you develop as a confident practitioner.
You’ll be assessed through a mix of written assignments, project simulations, presentations and group work that reflect professional quantity surveying practice. You’ll tackle tasks involving procurement, cost management, contract administration and digital tools, with regular feedback helping you develop your skills. Your research project will also demonstrate your ability to investigate a contemporary built environment issue independently.
We encourage a hands-on approach to teaching. Students learn by doing, putting their theory into practice in immersive environments and real-life scenarios.
Instead of just reading textbooks and listening to lectures, we'll ensure you have countless first-hand experiences and opportunities to get actively involved in your chosen profession, gaining practical skills that will prepare you for your future career.
From hands-on projects and real-world simulations to industry collaborations working with real clients, tackling real problems, and developing the skills employers are looking for. We create graduates who are prepared for the future. People ready to build their careers.
You’ll have access to a dedicated built environment project room, transformative learning spaces and bespoke computer labs with the latest software, such as Bluebeam, Revit, ArchiCAD, AutoCAD, Autodesk QTO, CostX, Synchro, and Navisworks.
You’ll also have access to the University’s library and digital learning resources, including academic journals, professional guidance, industry standards and relevant datasets. Library support sessions will help you make the most of these resources throughout your studies.

Fees and Funding
Studying at university is one of the most significant investments you'll ever make. Whilst you’re studying, you’ll have two main financial obligations – tuition fees and living costs. There’s lots of financial help available from the University of South Wales and external funding sources, that may provide loans (which have to be paid back) and grants, scholarships and bursaries (that don't).
*Full-time fees are per year. Part-time fees are per 20 credits. Once enrolled, the fee is anticipated to remain at the same rate throughout the duration of your study on this course except as described below.
Please be aware that we may increase the maximum fee for home students on full-time undergraduate courses only where the Welsh Government increases the permitted level of inflation of fees. Fees for all students (including part-time, postgraduate and international students) may be amended in accordance with our applicable Fees and Debt Management Policy. We will ensure that students are given clear, intelligible, unambiguous and timely information about our courses and costs in good time, ahead of the next academic year.
As a student of USW, you’ll have access to lots of free resources to support your study and learning, such as textbooks, publications, online journals, laptops, and plenty of remote-access resources. Whilst in most cases these resources are more than sufficient in supporting you with completing your course, additional costs, both obligatory and optional, may be required or requested for the likes of travel, memberships, experience days, stationery, printing, or equipment.
