USW Values
At the University of South Wales, we all play a part in creating a safe, welcoming, and supportive community.
Our values are not just words. They guide how we treat each other, work together, and make sure everyone can feel respected, included, and able to succeed. Whatever your background, experience, or viewpoint, you should feel valued at USW.
We ask everyone to be respectful, responsible, and considerate in everything they do. Together, we can create a positive environment where all students and staff can thrive.
Professional
Being professional means taking responsibility for your behaviour and actions.
Treat everyone with dignity, kindness, and respect. Take ownership of your decisions, engage positively with your studies, and help create the type of community you want to be part of.
Inspiring
You can make a difference to the people around you.
By being supportive, encouraging, and respectful, you help create a positive experience for others. Small actions can have a big impact and inspire those around you to do the same.
Creative
We encourage you to be open to new ideas and different ways of thinking.
Being creative means being curious, challenging assumptions, and looking for better ways to learn, work, and live together. Every member of our community has something valuable to contribute.
Responsive
We are proud of our diverse community.
Being responsive means recognising and valuing our differences, listening to others, and helping to create an inclusive environment where everyone feels welcome. We all share responsibility for challenging inappropriate behaviour and supporting a culture of equality and respect.
Collaborative
Success happens when we work together.
Be open to sharing ideas, learning from others, and supporting your fellow students and staff. By working together, we can achieve more as individuals and as a community.
Creating a safe and respectful community
Everyone at USW has a role in creating a safe, respectful, and supportive environment. We expect all members of our community to:
- Treat others with respect and kindness
- Consider how their actions affect those around them
- Respect personal boundaries and individual choices
- Take responsibility for their behaviour
- Help create an inclusive environment where everyone can succeed
Bullying, harassment, discrimination, hate incidents, sexual misconduct, and violence are never acceptable, whether online or in person. This behaviour will not be tolerated at USW.
Look out for each other
University life can be challenging at times. If you are worried about someone, don't ignore it.
Checking in with a friend, offering support, or sharing a concern can make a real difference. You do not have to manage difficult situations on your own. USW has specialist teams who are here to help.
Speak up
If something doesn't feel right, trust your instincts.
Whether you experience, witness, or hear about bullying, harassment, discrimination, inappropriate behaviour, or a safety concern, please tell us. We will listen, take your concerns seriously and help you understand the support available.
You can access help, guidance, and reporting options through Report and Support, either anonymously or by providing your contact details.
The Student Charter
Our values are supported by the Student Charter, which sets out how the University and Students' Union work together to provide a high-quality student experience.
The Charter explains what you can expect from us and what we expect from you, helping you make the most of your time at USW and achieve your personal and academic goals.
Being part of the wider community
Whether you live in halls, private accommodation, or locally, being part of the USW community means being considerate of others.
Enjoy your university experience, but remember that your neighbours and those around you may have different lifestyles and responsibilities.
Showing respect and consideration helps build stronger communities for everyone.
