My work at USW is 100% behind a screen; we do not get to see the students’ faces, we don’t learn their names, we don’t hear their stories, unfortunately. But it doesn’t mean that we don’t have an impact on students’ experience or on each other, as colleagues. At least that is what I want to believe; and it is one of the reasons that help me to get through the difficult days. 

When I am around campus or take part in any USW activities, and I cross paths with students – any student – I smile. I smile because I believe a smile has a powerful effect. Especially on students who are away from home, away from their families and friends. I just hope that they feel welcome in Wales, in USW, and they feel happy. As welcome as Wales has made me feel.

If you think you don’t inspire anyone directly, maybe just smile. It might contribute to someone’s day and that makes a difference in the long run.
