"The Treforest campus is breathtaking.’’
Hi, I’m Myra, from Karachi in Pakistan. My masters degree is the last step in my academic aspirations (unless I should decide to pursue a PhD...never say never). The masters course had to be diverse and incredibly insightful. It had to be something I genuinely wanted to study, and which would help further my career, which is why I chose USW. I had offers from other universities, mostly from London, but the technicality and depth of the course structure at USW won me over!
The course structure at USW doesn’t only focus on strategic marketing, but digital as well. I have completed three modules thus far and have gone through two very thick notebooks. I have learned so much in this short time and am only learning more. We also have access to a variety of certifications from the Institute of Digital Marketing (IDM), Hootsuite, Hubspot, and much more. All these components play a significant role in helping prepare me for my career in digital.
I also wanted to study somewhere beautiful. I received an offer from one of the universities in Scotland, but the course wasn’t as comprehensive, so it was eventually off the list, but I do hope to visit Edinburgh soon!
Also, Treforest Campus is breathtaking. I questioned myself, I come from an inherently chaotic and busy city, Karachi, and I love the loudness of it, but if I had to spend a year pursuing my masters in ‘busy’ London or ‘serene’ Treforest, the latter wins, always.
The UK is cold, especially coming from an extremely hot country, but you do get used to it. It is brilliant living here. Treforest is quite small and quiet, but once you get comfortable, you really see the little bit of heaven that it is. I go on walks and runs from Treforest to Pontypridd from time to time and the views are majestic! It’s also great having Cardiff so close if you want to go into the city.
Work Experience at USW
Employers want to recruit graduates who have existing knowledge of the working world. Our close links with relevant employers like British Airways, Sony, and Tata allow us to design courses that give you the skills they’re looking for.
I can’t choose one thing which has been the best part of my experience so far as there has been a plethora of little things. The wonderful, wonderful campus. My fantastic lecturers. I absolutely adore Jackie and Jonathan! The library – my second home. And the international challenge! I joined the challenge to meet other international students as I’m not the best at meeting new people, but it has been such a joy meeting and getting to know everyone. I am so thankful to Tim and the others for creating it!
My advice to students considering studying at USW would be to do your research. Make lists. Join university Facebook groups or simply email the university! Don’t just assume – ask. Research your desired course and if you can get in touch with someone currently studying at USW or in the UK to gauge their experience. Also, join the international challenge! If you’re missing home or worried you won’t make friends, the International Challenge is brilliant. You will see there’s someone going through exactly what you are, and you will make amazing friends!
