Support for Carers
If you are a Carer, you might be entitled to additional support. The Carers Bursary is worth £1,000 (full-time students) and £500 (6 month course students) per year to eligible home USW students who are unpaid Carers.*

As defined by the Carers Trust, carers are ‘anyone who cares, unpaid, for a friend or family member who due to illness, disability, a mental health problem or an addiction cannot cope without their support.
How does it work?
We’ll email you a link to apply for the carers bursary after you enrol – just make sure you disclose that you’re an unpaid carer on your current year’s USW enrolment form. If you’ve received the carers bursary in previous academic years, you’ll be emailed the link automatically.
You’ll then need to provide confirmation from a person who’s involved with the family on a professional basis – e.g. a Social Worker or GP – that you’re a carer.
Students who were previously in receipt of Carer’s Allowance will need to provide proof from the Department of Work & Pensions that this has now ceased.
For any queries about the carers bursary, applying for the bursary or student finance, or checking you’re receiving the correct entitlement – contact the Student Money Advice Team or email the Student Support Fund Team.
