The bursary is a one-off cash payment for £500 to support Clearing Package students with travel and living costs for their first year of study.
General conditions
This bursary is available to you if you meet all of the following criteria:
- Are a UK student enrolled onto a Foundation year or year one of an undergraduate degree for the 2026/2027 academic year; and
- Have enrolled on a full-time undergraduate course; and
- Are studying at Cardiff or Newport campuses; and
- Have accepted the Clearing Package offer for a standard single room at Glamorgan Court (Treforest Campus) and entered into the University’s accommodation agreement for the 2026/2027 academic year; and
- Meet the eligibility criteria for the USW Clearing Package 2026; and
- Remain enrolled on your eligible course and in occupation of the eligible accommodation at the date the bursary is paid.
The University reserves the right to withhold payment where eligibility cannot be verified or where you no longer meet the eligibility criteria on the payment date.
How do I apply for this bursary?
You do not need to apply for this bursary. We will check your eligibility using information held in University systems and will notify you if you are eligible. If you decide not to take up your Treforest room offer you will no longer be eligible for the bursary. If you wish to opt-out of receiving the bursary, please contact [email protected].
Payment terms
The bursary is a fixed, one-off cash payment of £500. It is not linked to actual travel expenditure and does not require submission of receipts. It will be awarded to eligible students in January 2027, around the beginning of the second academic term. Payment will be made into your bank account in the USW finance system. You may nominate an alternative UK bank account but you will need to contact us to arrange this by e-mailing [email protected].
This bursary is personal to you. It is non-transferable and may not be exchanged for any alternative benefit.
I believe I am eligible, but I have not received the bursary – what should I do?
Please email [email protected] if you think you are eligible for the bursary but have not received notification by Monday 18th January 2027.
Decisions relating to eligibility are made based on University records. Appeals will only be considered where you believe and can evidence there has been a factual error in the information held by the University.
Will receiving this bursary affect my eligibility for other USW bursaries and scholarships?
You are entitled to receive multiple USW scholarships and bursaries subject to each scholarship and bursary eligibility criteria. Receipt of another bursary or scholarship does not affect your eligibility for this bursary.
What happens if I leave the University or its accommodation for any reason?
If you withdraw from your course or move out of the eligible accommodation or no longer meet the eligibility criteria before the payment date, you will not be eligible to receive the bursary. If you leave the University for any reason after your payment has been made, there is no requirement for you to repay the bursary.
