Degrees that build your career

A new way to learn

Learning shouldn’t feel like theory on repeat. Long lectures, essays, and exams don’t always feel relevant to the workplace. That’s why the University of South Wales has flipped the script.

Many of our degrees are built into career-builder blocks that combine real learning and real projects that are endorsed, valued and designed with employers, and geared towards real-world professions.

Each block is designed to help you find your feet, build confidence and grow the professional skills and graduate attributes that are directly connected to the world of work. So, by the time you graduate, you’re not just qualified, you’re career-ready.

It means every step you take is with purpose and is meaningfully connected to your future career choices. Think of each block as a step up the career ladder, every term you’ll be levelling up skills, confidence and moving closer to that dream job.

Four blocks. Career focused.

Each year you'll study four career-builder blocks, giving you the time and headspace to dive deep, apply your learning, and see real progress.

Real learning. Real experience.

Every block is shaped with input from industry, so you’re building skills, confidence and connections that employers truly value.

No exams. Assessments that count.

Forget endless exams. You’ll be assessed through real tasks and projects that showcase what you will actually do in the workplace*.

Graduate career-ready.

Step out with more than a degree. You’ll leave with a portfolio of projects, connections, proven experience, and the professional skills to stand out from day one.

Why we do things differently

We want our graduates to be more than just ‘book-smart’, we prepare you to be career-smart. Working closely with industry and employers, we create graduates who are career-ready, so you’ll take the leap from potential to professional in a heartbeat, so you can exceed all expectations.

A focused period of study where you dive into a specific theme. Each block provides concentrated learning time, including assessment, and you’ll progress through a series of four blocks across the academic year.

This approach means you can apply what you learn straight away. It’s learning with purpose. It’s focused, practical, and built for real progress.

We’ll be introducing this new way of learning in phases. An initial group of on-campus courses will adopt this approach from September 2026. From September 2027, we’ll  expand it further to include additional courses for new students as part of the next phase of the rollout.

This new way of learning will be introduced across a range of subject areas, focusing on hands-on, real-world learning which can make the greatest impact.

If you already hold an offer for a course introducing this new way of learning, the content and format may change, but your offer won’t. If you later decide the changes aren’t right for you, you’ll still have the right to change your mind before you start.

We’re finalising the details now for courses starting in September 2026 that this applies to and will share more information with you before the end of March 2026. We’ll be updating our website and emailing all offer holders as new details are released, so you’ll know exactly what to expect and what to look forward to when you start your course.

We’re a university that’s all about real-world learning and preparing students to develop skills which are relevant to the world of work.

We already have strong teaching foundations and close employer links, this means every student on these courses will benefit from a high-quality, future-focused learning experience that reflects the world of work.

Students on our other courses can also be confident that the quality of their education remains excellent, and all our education provision will continue to provide learners with the knowledge, skills, and opportunities needed to succeed.

This new way of learning is a positive change designed to make your studies more career-focused, hands-on, and connected to the real world. We believe it will give students the best possible preparation for their future, but we understand it might not feel right for everyone.

You’ll always have the right to change your mind. If you’re unsure about any updates to your course, our Admissions Team is here to help. If you decide this approach isn’t for you, we may be able to offer an alternative course that better fits your goals, or signpost you to other options.

The new way of learning is being introduced gradually, starting from first-year entry onwards. If you’re joining a course partway through (for example, into Year 2 or Year 3), your delivery model will remain the same as current students.

You’ll be joining existing students and continuing with the same high-quality learning experience already in place. While the way we teach is evolving, our commitment to quality, support, and opportunity remains exactly the same. Our goal is to make sure every student leaves the University career-ready and equipped to succeed in the future.

We'll be in touch with more information on your course content and format before the end of March, but if you have any further questions before then, please do not hesitate to get in touch with us.
