This course covers everything from model-making and concept art to technical drawing and hands-on film work.
My journey so far
I’m in my final year of the BA (Hons) TV and Film Set Design course at USW. I chose this course because of its variety—it covers everything from model-making and concept art to technical drawing and hands-on film work. Each area allows me to dive into different aspects of storytelling and design, making it the perfect blend of art and practical skills.
I first discovered the course through a college presentation, and after exploring USW further at an Open Day, I was hooked. Meeting tutors and talking one-on-one about the course’s focus on both art and real-world applications sealed my decision. The University’s industry connections, especially with studios in Cardiff, have been invaluable. Through these links, I’ve gained hands-on experience, including working with ITV on props and assisting with BBC’s It’s My Shout initiative.
One of my proudest projects has been designing a world for the book A Confusion of Princes—it was challenging but incredibly rewarding to interpret and bring to life a location purely from the text. Living in Cardiff has only enriched this experience; the city’s varied architecture and creative scene continually inspire my work. Student life here is lively, with events like monthly animation nights bringing the whole course together outside of classes.

After graduation, I hope to work in concept art, ideally in a large art department where I can start as an assistant and work my way up. This course has provided both the technical skills and confidence I need to pursue my goals in set design and concept art.
