There weren’t many people in school or college I could talk to about gaming, but at university, I'm able to share my interests with similar people, which is really nice.
I've always been fascinated by video games. When I'm looking at a game, I'm always wondering what the process of it is - how did it become something this big from sketches? So I chose the Game Art course to explore my interests.
My favourite games are open world games like Horizon: Zero Dawn or Forbidden West, and The Legend of Zelda. In college, I played for an e-sports team called the Tydfil Titans which helped me learn more about the gaming industry. We also met the CEO of Esports Wales, and I got to speak to him personally about my art style.
Making friends
I currently live at home and commute. I chose to study at the University of South Wales because it’s nearest to my home in Merthyr Tydfil and I got the grades I needed. Before I applied, I visited USW with my college for a tour of the campus.
My favourite part of the Game Art course has definitely been meeting new people with similar interests of mine. There weren’t many people in school or college I could talk to about gaming, but at university, I'm able to share my interests with similar people, which is really nice.
On the course, I’ve been able to work in groups with other students. It’s good getting to know each other. I like working with different people and seeing what we can do as a team. I’ve also learnt a lot already about 3D modelling.
Employability and CareersCareer goals
When I graduate, I am hoping to be a concept artist somewhere. If I don't get the job opportunity I want, I'm more than happy to wait until something comes up.
I don't mind whether I work for an independent studio or a big, well-known one. I also wouldn't mind moving away, for example to work with the company that made Still Wakes the Deep. It’s a horror game set in an oil rig in the middle of the sea and it was very popular.
My advice for someone thinking about studying Game Art is that it doesn't really matter if you're a professional or not, as long as you're happy doing what you're doing. For example, if you're not good at doing 3D or 2D work, then it's completely fine on this course. No need for judgement.
