Discovering Animation Through College Projects

My passion for animation developed during my college course, where we created a range of media such as posters, games, animations and more. Out of everything we tried, animation was the part that grabbed me most. When I started researching universities, USW stood out because it offered industry-standard software like Maya, which I knew would give me an advantage after working mainly with Blender in college.

I attended an open day where we toured the building, explored the classrooms, and saw the motion capture room. It was enough to get a clear feel for the environment and the structure of the course. That first insight helped me understand what studying animation full time would look like.

Building Technical Skills for The Future

Although I’m in my first year, I already know how much opportunity the course offers. We’ve learned the fundamentals of animation through early projects like bouncing balls and pendulums, and now we’re moving on to designing robots. I haven’t collaborated with other courses yet, but I know it’s coming, especially in third year when animation students often work with games or film students on their final projects.

The facilities have been a major benefit - from access to Maya, ZBrush and Adobe software to the motion capture room, treadmill and punching bags used to capture movement. Weekly drawing sessions and sketching classes have also helped me build strong foundations in perspective and form, which feed directly into my 3D work. I’m still deciding between the games or movie industry, but I know studio work is where I want to be. My advice for new students is to start your projects early!
