Guest lectures changed my outlook and set me on the path to becoming a barrister.
Feeling at Home from Day One
At first, I wasn’t sure what path to take after my A-Levels. Law stood out because it affects every aspect of our daily lives—from civil and criminal law to public law. The more I studied it, the more I realised how relevant and significant it is in society. Choosing USW made perfect sense. I’ve lived in South Wales all my life and wanted to stay local, and the welcoming atmosphere and friendly lecturers at the Open Day helped me feel at home immediately.
During my time at USW, I made the most of the opportunities available to engage with real legal work. I completed a two-week placement in the Legal Advice Clinic, which was eye-opening and gave me valuable experience working with real clients. The law facilities, including the large library and hands-on environments like the Clinic, really enhanced my understanding of the profession and allowed me to apply what I was learning in a practical context.

The guest lectures at USW were a standout feature of the course. One early session with a barrister completely changed my perspective and helped me realise I wanted to pursue a career at the Bar. After graduating with a first-class degree, I applied to Cardiff University for a Bar Course and was accepted at the last minute—an opportunity I credit directly to my time and achievements at USW.
Now working as a court usher and administrative assistant at the Pontypridd Coroner’s Court, I interact with legal professionals daily and continue learning on the job.
My advice to future law students is simple: don’t be afraid. Ask questions, get involved, support others, and speak up. The lecturers are there to guide you, and the more you engage, the more you’ll grow.
