Building a future in Live Event Technology

I spent the summer working for a production company on major events such as How The Light Gets In, Tafwyl, and GlastonBarry.

Why I chose USW and my experience so far

I chose the BSc (Hons) Sound, Lighting and Live Event Technology course because I’ve always been interested in the technology behind events and wanted to develop that passion into a career. USW offered a great balance of practical and theory-based learning, helping me to build not only my technical skills but also my professional skills. Attending an Open Day confirmed my decision. Getting to see the facilities and meet the teaching team reassured me that USW was the right choice.

Through networking enabled by the course, I spent the summer working for a production company on major events such as How The Light Gets In, Tafwyl, and GlastonBarry. Cardiff is a great place to study live events because there’s always something going on, and the creative scene is really accessible. The experience I’ve gained has been invaluable for developing my skills and industry connections.

I’M PARTICULARLY PROUD OF THE WORK I DID FOR IMMERSED FESTIVAL, WHICH BRINGS TOGETHER STUDENTS FROM MULTIPLE COURSES TO WORK ON A LARGE-SCALE EVENT.

Industry projects and future ambitions

I’m particularly proud of the work I did for Immersed Festival, which brings together students from multiple courses to work on a large-scale event. I’ve also provided lighting support for Sports Journalism broadcasts in the TV studio and designing and operating sound and lighting for Beautiful Creatures in the theatre. These experiences have helped me develop my technical skills in real-world settings.

After graduation, I hope to work on large-scale productions, using the experience I’ve gained at USW to progress in the industry. My advice to future students? Get involved in everything! The opportunities and connections you make over the three years are invaluable.
