This course has completely changed my perspective—not only have I developed new technical skills, but I’ve also proven to myself that I can excel in science.
Choosing to study Sport and Exercise Science at USW
Studying BSc (Hons) Sport and Exercise Science at the University of South Wales has been an incredible journey. As a part-time student, I’m taking the course over six years instead of three. Initially, I had studied A-Level PE while working in international account management, and it sparked a deep interest in understanding the science behind exercise—both for my own performance as a competitive swimmer and to expand my coaching knowledge.
From the very start, USW stood out. I attended open days at both USW and Cardiff Met, but the warmth and support from staff at USW made my decision easy. They went out of their way to show me the labs and explain the course structure, making me feel truly welcomed and valued. That support has continued throughout my studies.
One of the best aspects of my degree has been the work-based learning opportunities. I’ve worked with Cwm Taf Morgannwg University Health Board in their cancer prehabilitation clinic, shadowing healthcare professionals and seeing firsthand how exercise interventions can improve patients’ recovery. I’m also a sports science assistant with Rhondda Cynon Taf Performance Swim Squad, applying my learning to support competitive swimmers.

Looking ahead, I plan to pursue a Master’s and transition into research, using my experience to support NHS teams and patients. This course has completely changed my perspective—not only have I developed new technical skills, but I’ve also proven to myself that I can excel in science. My advice? Go for it! The balance of theory, practical learning, and industry connections at USW is exceptional.
