Formula Student

Formula Student is a high-performance engineering project, and Europe’s most established educational motorsport competition, run by the Institution of Mechanical Engineers (IMechE).

Universities from across the globe are challenged to design and build a single-seat racing car in order to compete in static and dynamic events, which demonstrate their understanding and test the performance of the vehicle.

Representing the University of South Wales are the USW Falcons, formed in 2015, who are aiming to enter the IMechE Formula Student competition at Silverstone in 2016.

The team comprises of students from the School of Engineering, as well as students from Business and Computing. With their combined skills and a budget from the University, they plan to design and build a fast and reliable car. Their mission is to create a fully functioning internal combustion powered car that can participate in all Formula Student events.

The Falcon V1

USW Falcons are currently working on the final designs of the Falcon V1. Soon, production will be underway. Their mechanical and electrical team members are in the process of designing and testing the new frame and components.

USW Falcons

The USW Falcons have recently been awarded the "Rookie Team" scholarship from the IMechE Formula Student, receiving £3000.

The scholarship was awarded to one team that has never taken part in the competition before. Successfully beating other Universities, the USW Falcons team are eager and looking forward to use the money to help build a fully constructed and running vehicle.

Already the team have designed their car and are now actively seeking to secure discounts from a range of suppliers.
