Cyber Heroes

Pupils at Llancaeach Junior School took part in an online safety project called Cyber Heroes, designed by Thales to provide vital cyber security skills to both younger and older generations whilst promoting intergenerational interactions. The project also involved establishing links with YYFM hospital radio and the University of South Wales. 

Llancaeach’s Cyber Heroes team consisted of Year 5 and Year 6 members of their Student Council teams - the Digital Leaders & PR team. Following training, the Cyber Heroes team began the process of creating an online safety video for members of the elderly community. This was a project of many stages: writing and editing a script; rehearsing and filming; video editing; and producing.

Along the way, Steven Davies from YYFM and Steve Johnson, a senior lecturer in the Faculty of Business and Creative Industries at USW’s Cardiff campus visited the Cyber Heroes team to share their knowledge, skills and top tips when editing and producing digital content for a wider audience. 

Miss Turley, ICT Coordinator and Year 6 class teacher, said: “This was a fantastic cross-curricular project which enabled pupils to develop their Literacy, digital, team working and online safety skills in an authentic and creative context. They were working for a real purpose and a real audience. The project also forged strong links with YYFM and USW, which added value to the experience for our pupils. Our Cyber Heroes were determined to produce a high quality, online safety video, knowing that it would be helping the listeners of YYFM and beyond. The video that they produced will also be shared with members of our school community — pupils, parents, Governors — and a larger audience via social media.

This project has established a continuing relationship with YYFM — Miss Turley and Steve Johnson are already working on a future project involving pupils from across the school producing podcast stories for broadcasting on the YYFM station.
