Qualifications we accept
The University of South Wales accepts a range of qualifications to meet the listed course entry criteria for our Nursing and Midwifery degrees. A combination of qualifications are acceptable and those commonly accepted are listed here.
Healthcare Application Advice
- A Levels with GCSEs – 3 A Levels (in any subject) at BBB plus 5 GCSEs at C or Grade 4 (or above) which must include English Language and Mathematics/Numeracy or Key Skills/Functional Skills.
- GCSE Equivalent - Key Skills/Functional Skills Level 2* or Level 3 in Application of Number will be accepted in lieu of GCSE Mathematics/Numeracy. Key Skills/Functional Skills Level 2* or 3 in Communication will be accepted in lieu of GCSE English Language. *Level 2 must be achieved since 2016.
- BTEC Extended Diploma with GCSEs - BTEC Extended Diploma with grades Distinction, Distinction, Merit plus 5 GCSEs at C or Grade 4 (or above) which must include English Language and Mathematics/Numeracy or Key Skills/Functional Skills.
- GCSE Equivalent - Key Skills/Functional Skills Level 2* or Level 3 in Application of Number will be accepted in lieu of GCSE Mathematics/Numeracy. Key Skills/Functional Skills Level 2* or 3 in Communication will be accepted in lieu of GCSE English Language. *Level 2 must be achieved since 2016.
- Welsh Baccalaureate, A levels with GCSEs - Welsh Baccalaureate at grade B and 2 A Levels at BB plus 5 GCSEs at C or Grade 4 (or above) which must include English Language and Mathematics/Numeracy or Key Skills/Functional Skills.
- GCSE Equivalent - Key Skills/Functional Skills Level 2* or Level 3 in Application of Number will be accepted in lieu of GCSE Mathematics/Numeracy. Key Skills/Functional Skills Level 2* or 3 in Communication will be accepted in lieu of GCSE English Language. *Level 2 must be achieved since 2016.
- Welsh Baccalaureate, BTEC Diploma with GCSEs - Welsh Baccalaureate at grade B and BTEC Diploma grades Distinction, Merit plus 5 GCSEs at C or Grade 4 (or above) which must include English Language and Mathematics/Numeracy or Key Skills/Functional Skills.
- GCSE Equivalent - Key Skills/Functional Skills Level 2* or Level 3 in Application of Number will be accepted in lieu of GCSE Mathematics/Numeracy. Key Skills/Functional Skills Level 2* or 3 in Communication will be accepted in lieu of GCSE English Language. *Level 2 must be achieved since 2016.
- Access Diploma (Health or Nursing) - Access Diploma (Health or Nursing) – 60 credits overall with at least 45 at Level 3 with no lower than 24 Distinctions, 18 Merits and 3 Passes at Level 3 and 15 ungraded credits at a minimum of Level 2. This programme covers all the requirements including Mathematics and English. Other Access to HE Diplomas may not meet the Mathematics and English requirements. To meet the requirement, you must achieve 15 credits at Level 3 in Mathematics and English related modules.
- Introducing Health and Social Care (K102) - K102 - Introducing Health and Social Care (Open University) plus 5 GCSEs at grade C or Grade 4 (or above) which must include Mathematics/Numeracy and English Language.
- GCSE Equivalent - Key Skills/Functional Skills Level 2* or Level 3 in Application of Number will be accepted in lieu of GCSE Mathematics/Numeracy. Key Skills/Functional Skills Level 2* or 3 in Communication will be accepted in lieu of GCSE English Language. *Level 2 must be achieved since 2016.
- Irish Leaving Certificate - 120 UCAS tariff points from the Higher Leaving Certificate results plus C3 (or above) in Mathematics and English at Ordinary Level Leaving Certificate pre-2017 or H6 / O3 (or above) in Mathematics and English from 2017 onwards.
- QQI FETAC - QQI FETAC 6 Distinctions and 2 Merits plus C3 (or above) in Mathematics and English at Ordinary Level Leaving Certificate (pre-2017) or H6 / O3 (or above) in Mathematics and English from 2017 onwards. FETAC must include Mathematics units please note: you must indicate on your UCAS application form that you are studying this unit.
You can also meet the qualification requirements with a range of other acceptable qualifications including a degree qualification, DipHE, CertHE, HND, HNC, NVQ4, or CACHE Diploma.
Applications will not be considered if there are pending GCSE qualifications in Mathematics/Numeracy and English Language – these must be achieved prior to submitting the application. Evidence of competence in English and Mathematics is a requirement of the Nursing and Midwifery Council (NMC).
