Choosing a Course That Combines Theory and Practice
I chose to study Law because I wanted to understand the legal principles that govern our world today. I’ve always been curious about what has shaped the evolution of the legal system and how it continues to influence our society. The structure of the course at USW stood out to me because it includes practical learning alongside theoretical knowledge. That reassured me I’d gain more than just textbook understanding.
Once I started, I quickly saw how USW’s approach went beyond traditional study. Facilities like the Legal Advice Clinic, the moot court, and Hydra simulations brought the law to life, helping me apply what I was learning. My experience in the Hydra facility made Tort Law and the concept of negligence click more than any lecture had.

During my time at USW, I’ve taken part in a number of law networking events, webinars, and insight days thanks to the support of the careers team and the Law Society. One of my favourite experiences has been the Street Law Project, where I met judges at Cardiff Magistrates’ Court and learned about their journey into the profession. These opportunities helped me feel more connected to the career I want to pursue.
The highlight of my studies so far has been the Moot – a simulated court scenario that gave me the chance to argue a public law issue. It offered a glimpse into life as a barrister and strengthened my research and advocacy skills. In the future, I hope to qualify as either a solicitor or barrister, and use the knowledge from this course to reduce the legal burdens many people in society face. My advice to future students is simple: studying Law can feel daunting, but with determination and a strong work ethic, it is extremely rewarding – even if you take a less traditional route into the profession.
