Welsh medium Scholarships

The University offers scholarships to students who study part of their course through the medium of Welsh. The University is also part of the Coleg Cymraeg Cenedlaethol scholarship scheme.

Available Scholarships

The University of South Wales offers scholarships worth £250 to first year students who wish to study at least 5 credits through the medium of Welsh.

To apply for this Scholarship, you need to complete an application form and return it by 1 November 2024. Remember to read the Terms and Conditions before you apply.

The value of the Coleg Cymraeg Main Scholarship is £1,000 per year (£3,000 over three years), which is available to students who intend to study at least 80 credits per year of the following degree course through the medium of Welsh:

The value of the Coleg Cymraeg Incentive Scholarship is £500 per year (£1,500 over three years).

In the academic year 2024-25, the scholarship is available to all students who intend to study 40 credits per year from degree courses through the medium of Welsh.

Terms and conditions apply, see below for more details:

  1. Eligibility - To be eligible to apply for a USW Welsh Medium Scholarship, students must meet all of the following conditions:
  • Have applied for an undergraduate honours degree at the University of South Wales.
  • Commit to studying at least 5 (£250 Scholarship) or 40 credits (£1,000 Scholarship) of the course through the medium of Welsh.
  • Complete the USW Welsh Medium Scholarships application form in Welsh by the closing date.

2. Scholarship Payments – The £250 Scholarship will be paid in one payment:

  • The payment of £250 will be paid in May, subject to confirmation that the student has completed at least 5 credits through the medium of Welsh. This will be confirmed with the relevant academic staff.

The £1,000 Scholarship will be paid in two equal payments:

  • The first payment will be paid in November, subject to confirmation that the student has enrolled on an eligible undergraduate Honors degree course and that their attendance is satisfactory.
  • The second payment will be paid in May, subject to confirmation that the student has completed at least 40 credits of the course through the medium of Welsh. This will be confirmed with the relevant member(s) of academic staff.
  • If overpayments are made, the recipients must repay them in full.

3. Transfer - A student will remain eligible for a scholarship if they transfer to another eligible degree course.

4. Terminating the Scholarship - If a student does not meet the eligibility criteria outlined above, the University reserves the right to terminate the scholarship. If a student withdraws from his/her studies, or if he/she needs to withdraw, no further payments will be made. The scholarship will be terminated if the student is no longer registered as a student at the University.

5. Payment arrangements - The scholarship will be paid directly into the student's bank account via BACS in one or two instalments as outlined above.

6. Use of Data - By accepting this scholarship, students give permission for the University to use their details for promotional purposes and they may be required to provide a case study that could be used in university publications or on the website.

Note: These terms and conditions apply to the current academic year. The University of South Wales reserves the right to update these terms and conditions as necessary in the future.
