Can I afford to go to University?
When choosing a university, it’s important to find the right course and university fit for you — but we understand it’s equally important to feel confident that you can manage financially throughout your studies.
Cost of Living Support
At USW, we recognise affordability is a priority, and we’re committed to making university accessible to all. South Wales is known for having some of the UK’s most affordable living costs, giving you more freedom to fully enjoy student life, without ongoing money worries. With affordable accommodation, budget friendly activities and nights out, low-cost commuting, and plenty of tailored financial support, studying at USW allows you to concentrate on your future, not your bank balance.
Affordable Accommodation
Quality accommodation shouldn’t cost the earth. At USW, our university-managed halls offer comfortable living spaces with competitive rates, and bills included to make budgeting straightforward.
Whether you prefer the community vibe of on-campus living or want to explore affordable private housing nearby, you'll quickly discover our costs compare favourably against those of bigger UK cities. That means more of your budget goes toward experiences, friendships, and making lasting university memories.
Commuting and Travel
Staying at home and commuting to university can significantly reduce your living expenses, and at USW, it's both convenient and affordable. Our campuses benefit from excellent transport connections, with Cardiff and Treforest campuses each just a five-minute walk from their nearest train stations, and Newport station a short 10minute walk from campus.
Students also have access to discounted rail and bus passes, making your daily travel even more cost-effective. Additionally, our free shuttle service runs regularly between our Treforest, Glyntaff, and Sport Park campuses.
Scholarships, Bursaries, and Financial Support
We believe everyone deserves the opportunity to access higher education, regardless of their financial situation. Which is why at USW, we offer a range of tailored scholarships and bursaries designed specifically to help you manage your expenses.
