Paediatric Symptom Management Within Palliative Care

To enable the student to explore critical issues arising from contemporary paediatric palliative care especially in relation to symptom management.

For the student to be able to undertake a critical analysis of the assessment, planning, evidence base and management of symptoms, and evaluation of symptom management.

For the student to demonstrate a critical understanding of the principles and practices of paediatric palliative care.

The course is aimed at Registered Nurses and allied registered health professionals who work with children and young people with life-limiting or life-threatening conditions. As a stand-alone module, it can be used to inform practice regarding the management of paediatric symptoms within palliative care.

You will learn about the following themes:

  • Introduction to children's palliative care
  • Respiratory symptoms
  • Pain
  • Nausea and vomiting
  • Seizures
  • Psychological symptoms
  • Constipation and feeding
  • Oncology emergencies
  • Ethics
  • Care planning

This module requires you to study (including self-directed study) for 100 academic hours.

  • Lectures – 10 hours
  • Project supervision – 10 hours
  • Practical classes and workshops – 30 hours
  • Independent study – 25 hours
  • Directed study – 25 hours

The course is open to any qualified nurse or doctor who works with children and/or young people who are living with life-limiting or life-threatening conditions, and for non-UK staff, have evidence of an International English Language Test (IELTS) Level of 6.5 or above, with at least a minimum of 5.5 score in each component.

Formative assessment:

  • Support will be offered via discussion boards and students encouraged to submit a plan of the review.   

Summative assessment:

  • 3,000 word critical review of a chosen aspect of paediatric palliative care.

You will be assigned an Academic Supervisor who will assist you with your academic work.

An on-line induction session will explain how to use our distance learning resources. Additional video recordings will explain how to access support, use Turnitin and be an effective on-line learner.
